I have been tracking the App count using the wonderful WP7 Applist site and have all reasons to believe that Microsoft will cross 5000 Apps in Windows Phone Marketplace by Monday of next week. Microsoft could have reached this milestone this week but due to Christmas holidays, the app uploads would go down. As of this writing, Marketplace has 4775 Apps and growing by almost 90 apps every day.
